Copy

I was looking at Pinterest for ideas and came across the illustrator Lindsay J. Haynes and went onto her website to look at more of her work.
I found this design and loved the look of it and the way that the watercolour had been used to blend the different colours together. It is also part of my subject matter and so i decided it would be a good idea to copy it.
I started off by drawing out each separate section of the illustration, the background, the outline of the castle, the lighter parts of the castle and then the darker parts. After doing that I went ahead and used watercolour to colour each part, making sure to get the effect of that part right. When I had finished all the parts I scanned them and put them onto Photoshop and attempted to align them together. I soon realised that this wasn't giving the look I first wanted and did not make it look like the original.
I decided to draw it out again, but as a whole drawing. After doing that I did the same and used watercolour to add colour and the drawing. I scanned it into Photoshop and this was the result that I got.
I was incredibly happy with how it turned out but felt that it needed a little something else and so i decided to draw out the illustration again, but using different materials such as a blunt pencil and a cut up brush with ink. Using the pencil I drew out 2 outlines, one with very little detail and one with a lot more detail.

I then put these into Photoshop and decided to play around with the image editing it to make the lines more detailed. At first I used threshold so that the ink image a definite black and white image, and added it onto the watercolour image.

Although the lines don't fully match up, I really like the effect that this gives the water-coloured image and the way that the brush lines aren't exact and are scratchy gives the piece more texture. However I realised that the lines weren't as exact as I wanted, and seemed too thick and full on for the type of piece this is. I decided to use the thinner pencil outline drawings instead of the thicker ink drawing.

For the second part of my copy I decided to first change the levels of the watercolored image, to see if it gave a different effect, and I think this made a big difference to the quality of the colours and made the technique of watercolour more noticeable. I then went ahead and added in the pencil-drawn lines, making them black and lining them up best i could with the main image. I also decided to use multiply to make the lines look like they had already been drawn on the original image and not placed on top. Another thing i did to change this copy slightly was to take out the blue parts of the sky that were in the middle of some of the clouds. I think this gave a more clean-cut effect to the design and makes it look less careless and sloppy.

I am very happy with how this turned out and is definitely my favourite of the two copies. I really like how changing the levels meant that the whole piece changed, looking brighter and more aesthetically pleasing with the colours being more vibrant.

Drawings Of Subject Matter

After drawing my scamps for my double page and knowing definitely what I wanted to create for my final piece I decided to draw out things related to theme parks. To do this I went onto Pinterest for ideas, and then chose lots of different ideas to draw out.
I tried to make sure when drawing these that I didn't go too off task and didn't draw things that weren't fully related, or that I wouldn't be able to use within my designs.
Doing this helped me gain ideas about what type of things I could use for stickers within my final piece. It also helped me realise that I wanted my designs on my final to be hand-drawn in some way and not massively computer created.

Own Scamps - Front Cover and Double Page Sprea

Here I drew out some front cover ideas when I thought about doing a theme park design for disneyland. I struggled with this slightly and I think this is where I decided to change my idea and just do a general theme park. I still think doing this was helpful because it helped me realise the specific thing I wanted to do and just do a double page spread, rather than a front cover and double page.

After doing my front cover scamps I decided to start creating my double page scamps, staying with the general theme park ideas, rather than a disneyland theme so that I had more ideas to work with. I drew out 2 double pages on a page and then started scamping different ideas and layouts for what I could possibly use in my final piece.
Doing this helped me develop my ideas and think of the different ways I could use my ideas.

Scamps of Others

Here I have drawn out other children's magazine covers. I think this really helped me gain an idea into how different magazines use different techniques to create a front cover, it also helped me see what type of children's magazines are out there. Doing this will definitely benefit me when I come to start drafting for my final piece and making my final piece because I will already have looked at many styles of magazine.

Pinterest Boards

Here are some of the images I have found on Pinterest to give me inspiration for my work. I decided to keep it to my main ideas as much as i could, collecting different images to help me with my work and keep me interested in what i was doing. I also did this to get an idea of other designers work, who may have been creating the same type of design as myself.

Brainstorm and Brief

Here is my brainstorm of different ideas that relate to each theme in the exam subject. I went onto a thesaurus and typed in each word that are used in the theme, and then wrote down all the different words that related to these 4 words, so that I could get ideas for my unit 4 final piece. Many words that came up in the "perfection" part of the theme made me realise that I wanted to do something for this, and came up with the idea that in a child's eye, Disney World is perfect and exciting. This helped me come to the decision that I wanted to create something to do with Disney World in a children's magazine.

Brief.
Design a double page spread for the children's magazine "Story-time" for children to cut and stick different images onto a map, creating their own theme park. It should be suitable for all children aged 4 to 10.
